Mountain View is a council–manager city. Seven councilmembers are
elected at large — every voter votes on every seat, and no
councilmember represents a district. Three or four seats come up at each
even-year November election, for four-year terms.
The Council picks one of its own as Mayor and another as
Vice Mayor each January. The Mayor runs meetings and signs things; the
job carries no veto and no separate salary line. Day-to-day the city is run
by a professional City Manager the Council hires.
That structure matters when you want something changed: there is no
district office to call. All seven answer to the
whole city, and the room where it happens is the same room every time.
What this site is
mtnview.info is an independent, non-commercial mirror of Mountain View’s
public record. It is not run by the city. It carries no advertising and sets
no tracking cookies.
It exists because the public record is technically public and practically
hard to read: agendas arrive as hundred-page PDFs, meeting links expire, and
the calendar system has its RSS feed switched off. This site pulls the same
data through Legistar’s API after each Council meeting, keeps its own copies of the
PDFs so the links do not rot, and writes the parts that change back into the
page automatically.
